A decisive Group B finale
Bangladesh played the United Arab Emirates in their final Group B match of the Women's Asia Cup T20 2026 on Tuesday, September 8, at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, according to Outlook India. The UAE won the toss and chose to field first, and by the 12th over Bangladesh had slipped to 56 for 6, with Nahida Akter and Sharmin Akhter at the crease, per India Today's live coverage.
Outlook India reported that Bangladesh entered the match in second place in Group B with two points from two games, ahead of the UAE, who also had two points, on net run rate. Bangladesh's net run rate stood at plus 1.677 against the UAE's minus 0.854.
What each side needed
Under the group's qualification scenario as laid out by Outlook India, Bangladesh would reach the semifinals with either a win or a no-result, since a no-result would leave both teams level on points with Bangladesh ahead on net run rate. The UAE had only one path through: they had to beat Bangladesh outright to leapfrog them into the second semifinal spot from the group.
The Daily Star described the match as a do-or-die fixture for Bangladesh. The team had opened the tournament with a 71-run win over Thailand, but lost to Sri Lanka on Sunday by four wickets after being bowled out for 114, a defeat that saw Sri Lanka become the first Group B side to secure a semifinal place. Bangladesh batter Sobhana Mostary said afterward that the team's focus had shifted fully to facing the UAE, telling reporters, "UAE are also a good team. Now our focus is on the last match, and we should win this," as quoted by The Daily Star. Pacer Marufa Akter had taken 3 for 21 against Sri Lanka, including the wickets of Chamari Athapaththu and Imesha Dulani.
UAE chasing a first semifinal
For the UAE, a win would mark a landmark moment. The Khaleej Times noted that the same fixture, Bangladesh versus the UAE, was also the UAE women's team's first-ever international match in 2007, when they were bowled out for nine. Former UAE captain Chaya Mughal, who led the side to its Asia Cup debut in 2022, told the Khaleej Times that reaching the last four would be "a huge step for UAE women's cricket, especially with the first Asia Cup being hosted in the UAE."
The Khaleej Times also reported that the UAE, captained by Esha Oza, had beaten the ICC full-member side Zimbabwe in a bilateral series the previous year and earned One Day International status in that same period. The winner of the Bangladesh-UAE match was set to join India, which had already qualified for the semifinals and was awaiting its opponent, according to Outlook India.
