Emergency Proclamation

California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for the state as it prepares for a potentially historic super El Niño storm season this winter.

The proclamation aims to mobilize resources and enhance readiness for severe weather, which could include widespread coastal flooding and heavy precipitation.

El Niño Forecast

The super El Niño phenomenon is expected to bring unprecedented temperatures and weather impacts, with the temperature rise at the heart of the event reaching 3.05°C, surpassing the previous high by several months.

According to climate scientist Zeke Hausfather, the current El Niño could be the largest in at least 1,000 years, potentially breaking historical records and leading to the hottest year ever recorded.

Impact on Colorado

Colorado is also expected to experience the effects of the El Niño, with the Western Slope potentially seeing stronger snowfall early in the winter season.

Historically, El Niño conditions in Colorado have translated to strong precipitation early in the fall and winter followed by below-average snowfall during the middle of the season.
