Release date and first gameplay

Nintendo has released the first gameplay footage of its remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and confirmed it will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, according to VGC and Engadget.

The remake was first announced in June, but Nintendo had shown only a brief shot of young Link lying in bed, VGC reported. The new footage, shown during a Zelda-focused Nintendo Direct, revealed the Kokiri Forest opening area, Hyrule Field and Hyrule Castle Town.

Engadget described the result as a faithful remake that does not change the formula of the 1998 original, rather than a freeform reimagining in the style of Breath of the Wild. Players will still tackle the game's original dungeons and collect the same quest items, per Engadget.

Gameplay changes

According to VGC and Press Start, Link now has a dedicated jump button rather than jumping automatically at the edge of a ledge, and can swim underwater. Press Start reported that players can also dash after rolling to move faster.

Link's outfit has been redesigned to look as though it was made from leaves and other forest materials, VGC reported. Engadget noted the addition of voice acting and modern camera controls, while Z-targeting combat from the original remains intact.

Navi returns as Link's fairy companion, offering advice on enemies and points of interest, per VGC. Players can also aim the slingshot with motion controls or the control stick, and can hum songs into the Switch 2 to have them play in-game if Link has already learned them, according to VGC and Engadget.

New features and pricing

A new menu feature called Threads of Time will track everything Link has done, filling in a tapestry at story milestones, VGC reported. Press Start and Engadget both described this as a quest log or progression tracker to help players who lose track of objectives.

Nintendo is keeping loading screens between certain areas, such as when Link moves from Kokiri Forest to Hyrule Field, to preserve the feel of the original game, according to VGC and Press Start.

A pricing listing that briefly appeared on the Australian Nintendo Store, since removed, showed a discounted digital price of $94.95 AUD and a physical price of $109.95 AUD, with a digital price of $104.95 NZD in New Zealand, Vooks reported. Vooks said this would likely translate to $59.99 USD or £49.99 GBP digitally elsewhere, though it cautioned this was not guaranteed since the listing covered only Australia and New Zealand. Ocarina of Time originally released on Nintendo 64 in 1998 and holds a Metacritic score of 99, VGC noted, and previously received a remaster on Nintendo 3DS in 2011.
