Guide
Handling trolls and chat moderation on stream
July 8, 2026

A live chat is one of the most valuable parts of a stream, but it is also open to unpleasant comments. This guide offers concrete tools to keep chat safe and friendly as your audience grows.
Write simple rules in advance
Two or three clear rules, such as respect and no harassment, are enough to start. A long, complicated rule list often goes unread.
Put the rules in your chat topic or in a named command, so a new viewer can find them easily as soon as they join.
Use automatic filters and moderators
A platform's built in filters catch obvious offensive words automatically, taking part of the load off you.
As your audience grows, adding a trusted moderator reduces the time you spend managing trolls yourself, instead of focusing on the stream.
Stay calm and consistent
A troll is often looking for a reaction, so a calm, short response or simply ignoring them is more effective than an emotional argument live on stream.
Consistent action after a rule break, a warning and a ban when needed, shows the rest of your viewers that chat is genuinely protected.
Frequently asked questions
- When do I need to add a moderator?
- When you can no longer keep pace with chat and offensive comments often go unaddressed, that is a sign you need extra help.
- Is it worth arguing with a troll publicly?
- Usually not, a drawn out argument gives a troll more attention, a short, calm response followed by moving on works better.
- Does receiving donations increase the troll problem?
- The donation link and alert work independently of moderation, and in the case of an offensive message a moderator can typically manage its visibility.
- Is a Donator alert better than an automatic chat filter?
- They are two different tools, a chat filter controls text, a Donator alert gives a donation clear recognition, the two work well together.
