Firing of Ben Arbuckle

Oklahoma University (OU) has fired offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle. The decision was first reported by CBS Sports.

Arbuckle joined OU in December 2024 after leading Washington State’s offense, where he helped the Cougars rank in the top 10 in points per game in the nation.

Performance and Context

OU's offense has struggled this season, ranking No. 100 or worse in multiple offensive statistics in 2026, including points per play and rushing yards per game.

The Sooners (4-4, 2-3 SEC) lost to South Carolina (5-3, 3-3) 42-25, with the offense generating less than 80 total yards in the first half.

Under former head coach Lincoln Riley, the program was consistently inside the top 12 teams in points per game, including offenses ranked No. 3 in 2017 and No. 1 in 2018.

Hiring Process and Future

This is the fifth offensive coordinator in head coach Brent Venables' five years with the program.

Kevin Wilson, previously a Sooners offensive coordinator, is likely to assume a lead role in directing the offense for the season's final month.

Arbuckle was hired away from Washington State, where he led the Cougars' offense to ranking in the top 10 in points per game in the nation.
