Four Days at Lord's
England beat Pakistan by 194 runs on the fourth day of the second Test at Lord's, taking an unassailable lead in the three-match series.
England made 290 in their first innings and 208 in their second. Pakistan were bowled out for 110 and then 194.
Seam bowler Ollie Robinson took 4-24 in the final innings for match figures of 8-35. Josh Tongue took 3-46, according to the Guardian, and ended the match by having Mohammad Ali caught behind.
Shakeel's Resistance
Pakistan were set 389 to win, described by the BBC as a Lord's record target. Their highest total in the series to that point had been 171.
Robinson took two wickets in his third over to reduce Pakistan to 14-3. The Guardian reports that Robinson and Jofra Archer needed only 43 balls to take those first three wickets, with Azan Awais given out lbw on umpire's call and Abdullah Shafique bowled.
Saud Shakeel then made 97, the innings that kept Pakistan alive. Robinson removed captain Shan Masood and Muhammad Rizwan in successive overs, and when Shakeel holed out off Tongue, Pakistan folded to 194 all out inside 51 overs, per the Guardian.
Root's Second Reign
The win means Joe Root has won the first two Tests of his second spell as England captain. The BBC calls it England's first series triumph since 2024, and the Guardian says it is Root's first series win as captain in more than five years.
England won the first Test at Headingley by an innings. Batters Jordan Cox and Dan Lawrence each made half-centuries again at Lord's, while opener Emilio Gay is still waiting for a score to secure his place, the BBC reports.
Mohammad Abbas was the standout for Pakistan with the ball, taking 4-73 and then 5-57 to get onto the Lord's honours board. Opener Imam-ul-Haq missed the innings with a calf injury for the second time.
Off-Field Disruption
The BBC writes that the Test may be remembered more for what happened away from the cricket. The build-up was dominated by what it calls the Brydon Carse controversy, though the sources do not explain what that involved.
On the first day, the Pakistan Cricket Board threatened to abandon the match and the rest of the tour over an interview broadcast by Sky with the sons of former captain and prime minister Imran Khan. The sources do not say how that dispute was resolved.
England's attack was assembled after Ben Stokes' retirement. Stephen Fleming is yet to begin work as Root's head coach, the Guardian reports. The third and final Test starts at Edgbaston on Wednesday 9 September.
