The Semifinal Fixture

Club América, one of Mexico's best known football clubs, faced Monterrey in a semifinal of the 2026 Leagues Cup, the competition that brings together clubs from Mexico's Liga MX and North America's Major League Soccer.

AS USA reported that the two semifinals were set for September 1 and 2, and that the winner would reach the final. OneFootball described the América game as the second of the two semifinals, deciding the last Mexican team left in the Concacaf competition.

AS USA also noted that the two clubs had originally been scheduled to meet on October 10, on Matchday 11 of Liga MX's Apertura 2026 season, so the semifinal brought the fixture forward by more than a month. None of the sources report the result of the match.

Form on Both Sides

Vegas Odds, in a preview published for a September 2 kickoff, reported that América had won four consecutive matches, scoring at least twice in each and conceding only one goal across the run. The same preview credits the team to coach Guillermo Almada.

Their most recent win listed was 2-0 at home to Puebla, with a goal from forward Brian Rodriguez. Vegas Odds said Rodriguez had also scored and set up a goal in the Leagues Cup quarterfinal against Columbus Crew, which América won by the same 2-0 scoreline.

Monterrey arrived in less settled form. Vegas Odds reported a 1-3 home loss to Atletico San Luis, a second straight Liga MX defeat, though the club had eliminated Chicago Fire from the Leagues Cup in between. The preview said Monterrey conceded in eight of their previous ten matches, while their attack, led by Lucas Ocampos and Sergio Canales, kept covering the gaps.

Almeyda's History With América

Monterrey are coached by Matias Almeyda, the Argentine who previously managed Chivas of Guadalajara. AS USA reported that Almeyda faced América 11 times in that job, with four wins, three draws and four losses.

The publication focused on three knockout series between them. In one, Orbelin Pineda, now one of Almeyda's players at Monterrey, put Chivas ahead before América replied through Osvaldo Martinez and Oribe Peralta, with Carlos "Gullit" Peña missing a penalty.

AS USA also described a tie that Chivas won on penalties at the Azteca after a 1-1 draw, with Paolo Goltz and Osmar Mares missing for América, and a further series in which Peralta again knocked Almeyda out. The publication added that in each case, the side that advanced did not go on to win the tournament.

Recent Meetings

Vegas Odds said Monterrey had not beaten Club América in their most recent league meeting, a 1-0 result in February of the current season.

The same preview noted that the clubs met in the previous year's Apertura quarterfinals, where Monterrey eliminated América 3-2 on aggregate. Team news beyond the line-ups referenced by OneFootball is not detailed in the available reporting.
