Brewers Beat Cubs 9-5 at Wrigley Despite Misiorowski

Two Wins at Wrigley Field
The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 9-5 at Wrigley Field on Wednesday, Sept. 2, according to MLB.com and USA TODAY, a night after winning 9-4 at the same ballpark.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that the Tuesday, Sept. 1 win came after the Brewers had been blown out by 14 runs the previous night, with Milwaukee rallying from a three-run deficit to score nine of the game's final 10 runs.
MLB.com reported that Wednesday's result dropped the Cubs nine games back in the National League Central race. With the Philadelphia Phillies also losing that day, the Cubs remained one game behind the National League's top Wild Card spot.
Jacob Misiorowski's Rough Start
Brewers starter Jacob Misiorowski, a right-hander MLB.com describes as a leading contender for the National League Cy Young Award, was hit hard on Wednesday. He threw 92 pitches, recorded 12 outs and allowed five earned runs in four innings.
USA TODAY reported that this tied his career high for earned runs allowed, matching a start on July 2, 2025, when the New York Mets scored five off him in 3⅔ innings. He had allowed no more than three earned runs in each of his previous 25 outings this season, per MLB.com.
Alex Bregman hit a two-run homer off a 2-2 slider in the first inning at 105.5 mph exit velocity, per Statcast, then added a two-run single on a 102-mph fastball an inning later. Cubs shortstop Nico Hoerner made a diving catch in the fifth to escape a bases-loaded jam, but Chicago could not hold on.
Velocity, Pitch Mix and Workload
USA TODAY reported that fatigue does not explain Wednesday's outing. Misiorowski's fastball averaged 100.9 mph, slightly above his season average of 100.6, and he touched 102.4 with five pitches at 102 or better.
What changed was his pitch mix. He threw fastballs just 48% of the time, down from a usual 64%, and used his cutter 36% of the time against a normal 14%. He found the zone with only 39% of his fastballs and walked four, while still generating 13 swinging strikes and five strikeouts.
USA TODAY noted the 24-year-old is in his first full major league season and has reached 155 innings, more than his combined 2025 total of roughly 129⅓ across the majors and minors. He is 42 strikeouts from Ben Sheets' single-season franchise record of 264.
Around the Roster
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Christian Yelich and Joey Ortiz homered on Tuesday, with Jackson Chourio, Brice Turang, William Contreras and Ortiz each collecting two hits. Milwaukee finished 6 for 10 with runners in scoring position.
Ortiz and Cooper Pratt collided in short left field in the sixth inning that night. Both stayed in the game, and Ortiz homered a couple of innings later.
The Brewers also recalled catcher Bo Naylor from Class AAA Nashville and reinstated left-hander JoJo Romero from the injured list as rosters expanded.
