Coco Gauff Opens US Open Bid Against Zeynep Sonmez
The 2023 champion, ranked No. 4 in the world, meets the Turkish player in a first-round night match at Flushing Meadows.

First-Round Matchup in New York
Coco Gauff plays Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey in the first round of the women's singles draw at the US Open on Tuesday, according to syracuse.com. The site reports a 7 p.m. ET start at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, with the match airing on ESPN.
It is the first meeting between the two players at any level, a point made by both syracuse.com and Sports Illustrated. The US Open is the last of the four Grand Slam tournaments in the tennis season.
Gauff, an American, is ranked No. 4 in the world and is chasing a second title at the event.
Gauff's Form and Record
Gauff won the US Open in 2023, which Sports Illustrated notes was her first Grand Slam title. In the two editions since, in 2024 and 2025, she reached the fourth round and did not advance to the quarterfinals.
She arrives in New York after winning the Cincinnati Open, beating Jessica Pegula in straight sets in the final. Sports Illustrated reports that her run there also included wins over Marie Bouzkova and Marta Kostyuk.
Earlier in the season she reached the semifinals at Wimbledon, her best Grand Slam result of the year, and the semifinals of the National Bank Open in Canada.
Sonmez's Season
Sonmez is 24 and broke into the top 50 of the WTA rankings for the first time in July, syracuse.com reports. She has reached three tour-level quarterfinals in 2026 and beat former top-10 player Daria Kasatkina during the North American hard-court swing.
Sports Illustrated counts eight wins this season against women ranked inside the top 50, including victories over Ekaterina Alexandrova and Jasmine Paolini. Her best Grand Slam results are third-round appearances at Wimbledon in 2025 and at this year's Australian Open, and she reached the second round at the US Open last year.
The sources do not give her current ranking, the betting odds for the match, or which court it will be played on.
