Attack Overview

Hundreds of French supermarkets, including those of Intermarché, Coopérative U, Carrefour, Monoprix, and E.Leclerc, were hit by a cyber attack that caused their refrigerators and freezers to heat up, spoiling millions of euros worth of food.

Hackers gained control of the temperature-regulating software from Danish engineering firm Danfoss, forcing some refrigeration units to reach temperatures as high as 50C (120F).

Impact and Response

Intermarché reported that 150 of its stores were affected, with fridges heated up to 50C for six hours, leading to the discarding of all affected food. Cooperative U also confirmed that several of its stores were hit, with the company's CEO describing the attack as 'unprecedented' and 'extremely serious'.

Danfoss stated that the affected equipment was older models that no longer received software or security updates. The firm advised customers to update their systems but could not provide the exact number of affected units.

Security and Investigation

The French government, through its national cybersecurity agency ANSSI, is investigating the attack, which reportedly sparked fires in some stores and affected other European companies, including Albert Heijn in the Netherlands.

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu instructed ANSSI to coordinate with European counterparts to assess potential wider impacts.
