Market Performance
The Nasdaq Composite rose to a new intraday high on Tuesday, while the S&P 500 remained virtually unchanged. The tech-heavy index was up 0.4%, buoyed by a 4% gain in Sandisk shares following a positive analyst report.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average, however, declined by 0.4%, led by falls in JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and Visa.
Oil Price Impact
Oil prices played a significant role in the market's performance, with Brent crude futures trading at $99.68 per barrel, down 0.7% from the previous day. U.S. crude futures were down 1% at $95 per barrel, reflecting a fifth consecutive day of losses.
Oil prices had initially moved lower after Iran reportedly offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, though this has not been independently verified. Saudi Arabia is also reported to be planning to restart its East-West pipeline, which could further impact oil prices.
Key Events and Concerns
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, President Donald Trump said he has a 'big decision to make' regarding a potential deal with Iran or 'annihilating the Islamic Republic.' His comments came as traders continued to monitor tensions in the Middle East.
Stocks of companies with significant fuel costs, such as Carnival and American Airlines, saw gains due to lower oil prices, though both pared their gains after oil prices stabilized. AutoZone also reported a stronger profit for the quarter, driven by improved sales in the latter part of the period.
