Sensex Drops 788 Points as West Asia Conflict Lifts Oil
India's benchmark indices fell sharply in early trade on Wednesday as Brent crude neared $96 a barrel and global bond yields climbed.

The Morning Selloff
India's two main stock market benchmarks fell sharply in early trade on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. The Hindu reported that the 30-share BSE Sensex, the benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange, dropped 788.52 points to 76,155.76. The 50-share NSE Nifty, the equivalent index on the National Stock Exchange, slumped 269 points to 23,786.80.
The Economic Times reported that the decline erased close to Rs 5 lakh crore, or roughly 500 billion rupees, from market capitalisation.
Among the 30 companies in the Sensex, The Hindu listed InterGlobe Aviation, Eternal, Mahindra & Mahindra, UltraTech Cement, Bajaj Finserv and Bajaj Finance as the biggest laggards.
Oil and the West Asia Conflict
Both publications pointed to escalating tensions between the United States and Iran as the trigger. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading 0.76% higher at $95.37 per barrel, according to The Hindu.
V.K. Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, told The Hindu that the escalation of the U.S.-Iran conflict and the resulting 5% jump in Brent crude overnight to $96 was a negative for sentiment.
Ponmudi R., chief executive of the online trading firm Enrich Money, said crude oil had become the key near-term risk for Indian equities. He noted that WTI crude, the U.S. benchmark, had risen more than 8% over the previous two sessions on renewed U.S.-Iran military tensions and concerns about disruption to energy supplies from the region.
Global Backdrop
The fall in Mumbai followed losses elsewhere. Wall Street closed lower on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 down 0.7%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.8% and the Nasdaq off 1%, as rising energy prices and bond yields raised concerns about tighter monetary conditions.
The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield climbed to around 4.79%, close to a 20-month high. Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, founder and chief executive of the research analyst firm HST Wealth, said Asian markets had followed Wall Street lower as investors reassessed higher energy costs alongside a broader global bond selloff.
In Asia, South Korea's Kospi fell more than 3% and Japan's Nikkei 225 dropped nearly 3%. Shanghai's SSE Composite and Hong Kong's Hang Seng also traded lower.
What Comes Next
Ponmudi R. said Indian markets were likely to stay under pressure while crude prices and global bond yields weighed on sentiment. He added that India's domestic growth outlook provided an underlying cushion, but that external macroeconomic and geopolitical risks were expected to dominate near-term market direction.
The sources cover only the early part of Wednesday's session and do not say where the indices closed. Nor do they detail what specifically escalated between the United States and Iran.
