Thigh Problem in the Paulista Derby
Neymar was substituted at half-time of Santos' Copa do Brasil quarter-final second leg against Palmeiras after feeling a problem in his thigh, according to 365Scores.
The forward started the match, one of the most important of the season for Santos, but felt the pull after contesting a ball with Palmeiras defender Agustín Giay in the closing minutes of the first half. Video circulated of the moment, with Neymar reported to be limping and feeling pain in his right leg.
Coaching staff decided he was not in a condition to continue and he stayed in the dressing room for the second half.
No Diagnosis Yet
365Scores reports there is no definitive diagnosis so far, and that the extent of the problem and any time out are not yet known. Upcoming tests and how the injury develops will determine whether it is only muscular discomfort or something that keeps him out for longer.
The timing is awkward. The publication notes Neymar had been one of Santos' standout players in the second half of the year after the World Cup and had regained a leading role in the side.
Santos are all but out of the Copa do Brasil, the national cup competition, and will now turn to finishing their Brasileirão season and to the Copa Sudamericana.
The Shirt Given to a Corinthians Fan
Days earlier, Neymar was at the centre of a separate incident after Santos won 1-0 away at Corinthians in the Brasileirão at the Neo Química Arena in São Paulo. Mundo Deportivo reports he took a free kick in the 33rd minute that hit the left post of goalkeeper Hugo Souza, with Christian Oliva scoring the rebound.
After the match, Neymar handed his number 10 shirt to an eight year old Corinthians supporter who had held up a banner asking for it. MARCA USA reports that sections of the home crowd turned on the boy, and that Military Police escorted the child and his family across the pitch to safety.
OneFootball, citing Meu Timão, reports Corinthians have been charged before Brazil's sports court, the STJD, over three incidents from that match, including the treatment of the boy, with a hearing set for Friday at 10:30. The article says charges cover a three minute delay restarting the second half, which also involves Santos, and 67 children taking part in the team entry protocol against a permitted 22.
