Top Teams Struggled

In Week 8, several top-ranked college football teams suffered surprising defeats. Notably, No. 2 BYU lost to No. 18 Texas, 39-31, in double overtime. Similarly, No. 7 Ole Miss lost to No. 19 Texas 34-27, and No. 11 Tennessee lost to unranked South Carolina 27-24 on a last-second field goal.

The unpredictability extended to other games, with No. 14 Houston losing to No. 9 Utah 21-13, and No. 15 Iowa falling to unranked Wisconsin 13-6 in overtime. Unranked teams also pulled off notable victories, such as Indiana beating No. 6 Michigan 13-6.

The week started with six undefeated teams, but by the end, only three remained undefeated: No. 1 Miami, No. 9 UCLA, and No. 10 Utah. This marked the first time in the Division 1-A and Division 1-AA era, starting in 1978, that three or fewer undefeated FBS teams remained through Oct. 24.

Notable Upsets

The week was also characterized by several unranked teams defeating ranked opponents. Notably, No. 2 BYU, No. 7 Ole Miss, No. 8 Texas Tech, No. 11 Tennessee, No. 14 Houston, No. 15 Iowa, and No. 16 USC all suffered losses to unranked teams.

The upsets included No. 3 BYU losing to No. 18 Texas, No. 11 Tennessee losing to South Carolina, and No. 14 Houston losing to No. 9 Utah. These results reshaped the playoff picture and highlighted the unpredictable nature of the college football season.
