Remote work, measured

1779 remote vacancies are on the board right now, and 1290 of them accept an applicant from where you are reading this. Everything below is computed from those adverts and may be reused with a link back.

Who may apply

1290 adverts place no restriction on where the candidate lives. 489 ask for a candidate on the European continent, which is a geographic scope and not a work permit rule. There is no third answer: an advert that requires local work authorization does not reach this board.

By country

153 of 200 countries have a published average wage we can compare against. The rest have a page but no ratio, because a ratio needs a sourced denominator.

The ratio is the median published pay on this board divided by the average monthly wage in that country, both in US dollars. It says what a remote job is worth where you live. It does not say that you will be hired, and it is computed over the adverts that disclosed pay rather than over the market.

Every vacancy is fetched from a public board, screened for work authorization, and linked back to the original advert. We take no applications and charge no commission.

66 days of the board's own size, one point a day.

The dotted part is reconstructed from when each vacancy was on the board, because nothing was counting yet on those days. The solid part was counted.

How this is computed

What the numbers are taken over

Every figure comes from the vacancies on this board on the date shown, not from a survey and not from another site's research. The board holds remote adverts from five public sources, screened so that only roles open to a candidate without local work authorization remain.

The board is not the remote job market. It is a filtered slice of it, and the figures describe that slice. Where a number is taken over fewer adverts than the board holds, the count is printed next to it.

Why hourly rates are left out of the pay figure

An hourly rate is a price, not an income: it says nothing about how many hours exist. Multiplying one by an assumed working year invents a salary nobody offered, and that number would then be divided by a national average wage. So the monthly figures use adverts that state a yearly, monthly or weekly amount, and an advert whose period our parser guessed is excluded as well.

This costs a lot of rows and is the reason the pay sample is much smaller than the number of adverts that mention money at all.

Currencies and dates

Only currencies with a committed rate are converted, and an unknown one yields no figure rather than a guess. The local average wage is the ILO series, in US dollars, and every row shows the year it was observed, because a wage without its year is not a fact a reader can check.

Frequently asked questions

Where do these numbers come from?

From this board's own vacancies: 1779 live remote adverts on the date shown. Nothing here is copied from another study.

Why is the pay sample so much smaller than the board?

The median is computed over 140 adverts, because most employers publish no pay, and hourly rates are excluded on purpose. An hourly rate cannot be turned into a monthly income without inventing the hours.

What does the pay to wage ratio mean?

It divides the median published pay by the average monthly wage in that country. A ratio of four means a typical disclosed remote salary here is worth four local average wages. It is a measure of what the work is worth locally, not a hiring probability.

Why do some countries have no row?

Because no average wage has been sourced for them yet. A ratio with an invented denominator would be worse than an absent row, so the row is absent.

May I republish this?

Yes, including commercially, with attribution and a link. The CSV and JSON downloads carry the same terms.
