Dodgers Follow Detroit Series Win With Cardinals Collapse

Three Starters, One Run Each

The Los Angeles Dodgers closed August by winning two of three games against the Detroit Tigers, and the strength of the series was their starting pitching. Los Angeles Sports Nation reports that all three starters allowed exactly one run.

Tarik Skubal opened the series on Friday in Detroit, facing his former team for the first time since being traded to the Dodgers. He pitched six innings, allowed four hits and one run, and struck out seven in a 2-1 Dodgers win.

Blake Snell followed on Saturday with five innings, three hits, one run and 10 strikeouts. That was not enough. True Blue LA reports the Dodgers lost that game 2-1 at Comerica Park.

Tyler Glasnow closed the series with seven innings, two hits, one run and six strikeouts in a 6-1 win. Teoscar Hernandez homered in that game.

A Season-High 13 Runs Allowed

The month turned quickly. True Blue LA reports that a pitching performance led by Eric Lauer resulted in the Dodgers giving up a season-high 13 runs in a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night.

The Dodgers offense scored eight runs in that game, which the publication describes as the bats finally showing up. It was not close to enough.

Los Angeles Sports Nation describes the game as going completely off the rails, and says the outing reached the point where a position player was pitching.

Yamamoto and the Offense Problem

Yoshinobu Yamamoto was set to take the mound on Wednesday against the Cardinals. True Blue LA notes he has faced St. Louis twice before and has not allowed a run in 11 innings against them.

His problem has been run support. In his last start he went 6 1/3 innings and allowed only a leadoff home run to Atlanta Braves catcher Drake Baldwin, but Braves starter Chris Sale shut out the Dodgers and the offense produced nothing.

True Blue LA reports Yamamoto had a 1.95 earned run average in August with a 1-2 record to show for it. Los Angeles has scored three or more runs behind him only twice in his past six starts, and five of those games were decided by one run.

The publication describes the Dodgers as a below-average offense for two months. It also notes the team was swept by the Braves before the Detroit series, finishing a road trip at 2-4. The result of Wednesday's game is not covered in the available reporting.
