Current Weather Conditions

A flood watch remains in effect for Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, Hawaii Island, and Kahoolawe through late tonight, as a surface trough shifts over the eastern half of the state.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to impact all islands Wednesday afternoon, with the highest probability over Maui County and Oahu. The weather service expects an additional 1 to 3 inches of rainfall over Oahu and 3 to 6 inches over Maui County.

Significant flooding may occur due to the overflow of streams and drainages, with roads in several areas potentially being closed and property damage in urban or low-lying spots due to runoff. Landslides may also occur in areas with steep terrain.

Impact on Local Communities

All schools on Molokai were closed Wednesday due to flooded roads, and Maui County officials opened a temporary evacuation site at 9:45 p.m. in Helene Hall, at 174 Keawa Place in Hana, providing a safe gathering area for residents.

Maui police reported that Piilani Highway at mile marker 51 in Hana was closed in both directions due to high water, and Uakea Road and Keanini Drive in Han were also closed due to flooding.

On Oahu, heavy showers have pounded the Windward side, including Kailua, Kaneohe, Ahuimanu, Kahaluu, Waiahole, and Waikane, with minor flooding ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area.
