The Opening Fixture

India began their Women's Asia Cup 2026 campaign against Thailand at the Dubai International Stadium, with Harmanpreet Kaur captaining the side. Yahoo Sports reported the fixture was scheduled for August 30.

The tournament is the 10th edition of the competition and the sixth since it moved from the 50 over format to Twenty20 International cricket. Yahoo Sports reported that it runs in Dubai from August 28 to September 13, with every match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Eight teams are split into two groups of four. India are in Group A with Pakistan, Thailand and Hong Kong, while defending champions Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indonesia and hosts the United Arab Emirates make up Group B.

Jemimah Rodrigues Ruled Out

Batter Jemimah Rodrigues was not named in India's playing XI for the Thailand match. Sportstar reported that she was ruled out of the Asia Cup and the upcoming Asian Games after an injury sustained playing in The Hundred.

Sportstar quoted a statement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India, which said Rodrigues sustained a right hamstring injury on August 3 while playing in The Hundred in England. The BCCI said its medical team assessed her at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and confirmed a high grade tear.

Opener Pratika Rawal was named as her replacement in India's squad.

Coach on Form and Conditions

India head coach Amol Muzumdar spoke about the absence at a pre match media interaction, in remarks reported by Revsportz. "Speaking about Jemimah, I have always maintained that she is a clutch player for us. She will definitely be missed," he said, adding that her rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence in Bangalore was well taken care of.

Asked about India losing nine of their sixteen T20 Internationals this year, Muzumdar told reporters the team does not pay too much attention to form. "There is a huge scope of improvement. There is a young side," he said, according to Revsportz.

He also described conditions in Dubai as hot and humid, and said the squad had worked on fitness and fielding during a 15 day camp at the Centre of Excellence.

Format and Records

The top two teams in each group advance to the semi finals, which Yahoo Sports reported will be played on September 10 and 11, with the final on September 13. The Group A winner meets the Group B runner up, and the Group A runner up meets the Group B winner.

Yahoo Sports reported that India have won the tournament a record seven times out of nine editions. Sportstar reported that India have won three of the T20 format editions and finished runner up in 2024.

The result of the Thailand match is not given in the available reporting.
