Rockstar and Sony Reveal Two GTA VI DualSense Controllers

The Announcement

Rockstar Games and PlayStation have unveiled two limited-edition DualSense wireless controllers themed around Grand Theft Auto VI, the next entry in Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto series. The reveal came during Sony's State of Play broadcast, according to IGN and the PlayStation.Blog.

One controller is black, the other white. Both launch alongside the game on November 19.

Design Details

PlayStation.Blog says the pair are inspired by Vice City, the fictional setting players visit in the state of Leonida. Both feature a shimmering, color-shifting finish meant to blend the hues of a Vice City sunset with neon light, plus custom palm tree details molded directly into the controller and official Grand Theft Auto VI branding.

The white version is described as Vice City at daybreak, with white sands and pastel skies. The black version is meant to capture the city's nightlife.

Descriptions of the finish differ slightly between outlets. IGN reports a VI logo engraved on the touchpad, palm tree etchings around the grips, the Grand Theft Auto logo etched into the back and a neon purple trim around the lower half. The Verge describes a sparkly blue-purple sheen around the thumbsticks that extends into the grips, with a VI logo stamped on the touchpad.

Price and Availability

Pre-orders open on September 10 at 10:00am local time. PlayStation.Blog lists a start of 7:00am PT / 10:00am ET in the United States and 10:00am local time in the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

The recommended retail price is $84.99 USD, ¥12,480 including tax, €84.99 or £74.99. PlayStation.Blog says the white edition will be sold in limited quantities globally at direct.playstation.com and at participating retailers, while the black edition will be sold exclusively through direct.playstation.com where available and through select retailers elsewhere.

IGN notes that no console bundle was confirmed by Sony or Rockstar, and says one now seems slightly unlikely.

Background

PlayStation has said Grand Theft Auto VI will "play best" on PS5, with the game using the DualSense speakers, haptic feedback and adaptive triggers along with the console's Tempest 3D AudioTech. PlayStation.Blog says those features respond to the action during the story of the game's characters, Jason and Lucia.

Complex reports the November 19 date follows delays, and that in August Rockstar addressed a leak, calling it "heartbreaking" for the team and saying it was not how the studio intended people to see the game. The same statement conceded development had taken longer than expected.

IGN says Rockstar debuted the first Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay the previous week and invited select media to preview the game. The sources do not say whether the controllers will be produced in any stated quantity.
