Highlights of October's Meteor Showers

October 2026 will be a great month for skywatchers, with seven meteor showers lighting up the night sky. The Draconids and Orionids are among the highlights, offering opportunities to catch shooting stars in the evening hours.

The Draconids, which peak on Thursday night into Friday, are unique because their main maximum happens at 9 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, much earlier than most meteor showers. This shower can produce five to 10 meteors per hour under dark skies, with the potential for unexpected outbursts.

Orionids: A Shower of Fast Meteors

The Orionids, named after the constellation Orion, will reach their peak on October 21st, offering up to 15 meteors per hour. The shower is particularly fast, with meteors entering Earth's atmosphere at around 41 miles per second.

For the best viewing experience, find a dark location away from artificial light and allow your eyes to adjust for about 20 minutes. Orion will be in the east, but the Moon's phase may limit visibility, especially on the night of the peak.

Southern Taurids: A Consistent Show

The Southern Taurids, which peak on October 10th, can produce up to one shooting star every 10 minutes. This shower is easily visible in the Northern Hemisphere and offers a steady stream of meteors throughout the evening.

The Southern Taurids are part of a comet's debris trail, specifically material left behind by Halley's Comet. The shower is active twice a year, with the other peak in May.
