Skenes faces Webb as Giants visit Pirates at PNC Park

Series Opener at PNC Park
The Pittsburgh Pirates are hosting the San Francisco Giants for a three game set at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, with Pirates On SI reporting the series runs Sept. 1 to Sept. 3.
Pittsburgh sends right hander Paul Skenes to the mound in the opener. San Francisco counters with Logan Webb. Both teams play in Major League Baseball's National League.
Pirates On SI says the series begins a homestand that opens the last 24 games of the club's regular season.
The Pitching Matchup
Yahoo Sports lists Skenes at 9-11 with a 3.79 earned run average and Webb at 8-8 with a 3.72 ERA. Yahoo Sports also notes Skenes has not won a game since July 19.
Skenes comes in off six innings against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park in which he allowed three hits and no earned runs in a 1-0 win, according to Yahoo Sports. Pirates On SI dates that outing to Aug. 25, calls it his best start in three months and describes him as the 2025 NL Cy Young Award winner.
Webb last pitched against the Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 26, going six innings and giving up five hits and two earned runs in a 10-9 home loss, Yahoo Sports reported. OutKick adds that Webb carries a 1.10 WHIP, a 4.16 ERA on the road and a 4.98 ERA in night games, and that Pirates hitters have 12 hits in 58 at bats against him.
Where the Teams Stand
Pirates On SI puts Pittsburgh at 67-71 and six games back in the National League Wild Card race, and says the club needs to win most of its September games to reach the playoffs. Yahoo Sports describes the Pirates as four games under .500 with a chance at a winning record.
OutKick reports San Francisco at 57-81 and says the next loss guarantees a losing season, with the team on course to lose between 90 and 95 games. OutKick blames the pitching staff, which it says carries a 4.34 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP.
OutKick also states that Webb deleted his X account after arguing with online critics. The sources do not give a start time, a broadcast listing or a probable starter for the third game. Pirates On SI says Bubba Chandler, who has a 2.95 ERA in the second half of 2026, starts on Sept. 2.
