Execution Gone Wrong

Christa Pike, 50, survived a botched lethal injection attempt in Tennessee on September 30, 2026. Pike was sentenced to death for murdering Colleen Slemmer with her then-boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp in 1995.

Pike's Condition

A lawyer for Pike, Stephen Ferrell, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that Pike is moving around her hospital room for the first time. She is still experiencing the after-effects of the drug pentobarbital, which was injected in two doses. Pike is described as being mentally 'foggy' and having difficulty with her thoughts.

Legal and Medical Concerns

Experts warn that lethal injection is far from the humane method it is often portrayed to be. Professor Corinna Barrett Lain from the University of Richmond, who has researched the death penalty, highlighted that one in three lethal injections fail, with 84 per cent of autopsies revealing 12 to 18 puncture wounds. She noted that the process is error-prone and often carried out by non-medical prison guards.
