Vikings to Waive Quarterback Max Brosmer After Roster Cut
Minnesota kept four quarterbacks on its initial 53-man roster, then moved to waive Max Brosmer to clear space for waiver claims.
The Roster Move
The Minnesota Vikings, a National Football League team based in Eagan, Minnesota, are waiving quarterback Max Brosmer, NBC Sports reported, citing Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
According to NBC Sports, the Vikings needed a roster spot after claiming a pair of players off waivers. The move comes a day after the team set its initial 53-man roster.
NBC Sports reported that Brosmer could be brought back on Minnesota's practice squad if he clears waivers. Whether that happens is not yet known.
Four Quarterbacks on the Initial 53
The Vikings finalized their initial 53-man roster on Sunday evening, according to The Athletic, and it included four quarterbacks: Kyler Murray, J.J. McCarthy, Carson Wentz and Brosmer.
Vikings.com said that was the first time in at least a decade the club had kept four quarterbacks on an initial roster. The team's own account noted Murray is entering his eighth NFL season and would make his Vikings debut on Sept. 1.
The Athletic wrote before the waiver report that it would be unusual for Minnesota to carry four quarterbacks through the 2026 season, and called it an open question whether the team would do so.
Brosmer's Background
Brosmer, 25, entered the league as an undrafted free agent last year, NBC Sports reported. He played five college seasons at New Hampshire and one at Minnesota.
As a rookie he appeared in seven games with two starts, completing 66.2 percent of his passes for 328 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions, per NBC Sports.
The Athletic reported that the Vikings believed in his potential when they signed him, that injuries pushed him into action earlier than the team wanted, and that a thumb injury limited his preseason work. He completed 20 of 35 passes in Friday night's preseason finale.
The Wider Quarterback Picture
The Athletic reported that many around the NFL believed the Vikings would explore trade opportunities involving McCarthy, the team's 2024 first-round pick, ahead of Sunday's cutdown deadline.
McCarthy, 23, did not play in Friday's preseason finale against the Denver Broncos. Several team sources told The Athletic, on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, that he was not comfortable enough to play with an ankle injury.
McCarthy is entering his third season with roster control through 2027, The Athletic said, adding that his 2025 performance prompted the team to sign Murray this spring. With Brosmer waived, NBC Sports reported, Wentz and McCarthy remain behind Murray.
