Yankees Score Five in 10th to Beat Angels 6-3 in Anaheim

Five Runs, Two Outs
The New York Yankees scored five runs with two outs in the 10th inning to beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-3 on Wednesday night in Anaheim, California.
New York loaded the bases with one out when Jose Caballero singled and Jazz Chisholm Jr. walked against Angels reliever Luke Murphy. Murphy got Luis Garcia Jr. to pop out, leaving him one out from stranding the automatic runner placed at second base to start the inning.
Instead he gave up four straight hits. Austin Wells drove in two with a single to right, and Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham and Ben Rice each followed with an RBI single for a 6-1 lead.
"I feel like I was attacking like I had been in the past and they were putting good swings on it," Murphy told reporters, according to the Orange County Register. "So hats off to them."
A Duel Between Starters
Yankees right-hander Cam Schlittler allowed one run and two hits over eight innings, striking out nine and walking none. He retired 20 of the first 21 batters he faced, the only exception a soft single to left by Vaughn Grissom in the second.
Grissom got him again in the seventh, driving a 95-mph cutter over the center-field wall for a solo home run that tied the game at 1-1.
ABC7 New York reported it was Schlittler's 19th career start allowing one run or none, a Yankees franchise record that moves him past Ron Guidry in 1978, Whitey Ford in 1964 and Jack Chesbro in 1904, who had 18 each. Schlittler carries the American League's best earned run average at 2.04.
Angels left-hander Reid Detmers matched him for seven innings, giving up one run and six hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. The only run against him came on an RBI double by Amed Rosario in the fourth.
Extra Innings and Aftermath
The Angels have now lost 13 of their 17 extra-inning games this season, according to the Orange County Register, and have been outscored 30-12 across 18 extra innings.
Manager Kurt Suzuki said the club had backed Murphy in the spot. "He was one pitch away," Suzuki said. "At this level when the floodgates open, it's hard to stop."
Moises Ballesteros hit a two-run homer off Yankees reliever Michael Fulmer in the bottom of the 10th, his first with the Angels. David Bednar struck out three in a scoreless ninth and was credited with the win.
The game was delayed about 10 minutes in the sixth when a 79.5-mph line drive off Rice's bat struck a photographer in the head in the first-base camera well. The photographer walked to a medical vehicle and shook Rice's hand before being carted away. The sources do not report his condition.
