HBO Releases New Harry Potter Trailer With Sorting Hat
The second look at Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone gives speaking lines to Harry, Ron, Hermione and their Hogwarts professors.
The New Footage
HBO has released a new trailer for its television series Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, based on the first novel by J.K. Rowling.
Deadline reports that the trailer opens with Harry, played by Dominic McLaughlin, Ron, played by Alastair Stout, and Hermione, played by Arabella Stanton, arriving for the sorting ceremony, where Albus Dumbledore welcomes them "to a new year at Hogwarts."
In a voiceover, Professor Minerva McGonagall, played by Janet McTeer, says: "Before the start-of-term banquet first years will partake in the sorting ceremony." Deadline notes the trailer shows more of Dumbledore and Severus Snape than the first one did.
Scenes and Details
The Hollywood Reporter says Harry, Ron, Hermione and their core professors all get speaking lines, and that the footage includes Harry under the Sorting Hat, the Quidditch pitch, and Snape, played by Paapa Essiedu, insulting Harry. Snape tells him: "Let's hope you show some talent on the Quidditch pitch, Potter."
The Hollywood Reporter adds that the production values and special effects look cinematic rather than overtly televisual, and that the muted, desaturated colour palette of the first teaser, which the publication says was widely criticised by fans, is gone.
Harrypotter.com, the official Wizarding World site, points to moments not in the books, including Hermione walking through the Hogwarts Express and asking Lavender Brown and Hannah Abbott whether they loved the summer reading. It also describes a scene at the Weasley family home, The Burrow, where Ron's Hogwarts letter is splattered with ketchup by Fred and George while Percy receives a prefect badge.
Cast and Production
The main cast also includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Warwick Davis as Filius Flitwick and Sirine Saba as Pomona Sprout, along with Tristan Harland and Gabriel Harland as Fred and George Weasley.
Deadline lists further cast members including Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander.
The series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod executive producing and directing multiple episodes for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. Rowling, Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV and David Heyman of Heyday Films also executive produce. The sources do not give a release date for the series.
