The Instagram Tribute

The rapper Lil Nas X has announced that his mother, Tameka Hill, has died. He confirmed the death in an Instagram post on Saturday, Aug. 29, according to USA TODAY.

"RIP TO THE BADDEST EVER! LOVE U FOREVER MOMMY. this one's gonna hurt," he wrote in the caption.

The 27 year old musician, whose real name is Montero Hill, shared a carousel of photographs of his mother. USA TODAY reports the images included nostalgic pictures of her and others showing the two of them together during his childhood and his rise to fame.

No cause of death has been given. The NZ Herald notes that he has not revealed any further information about how his mother died, and USA TODAY says it has reached out to his representative for comment.

A Relationship He Rarely Discussed

Lil Nas X, best known for the songs "Old Town Road" and "Panini", had largely kept details about his mother private. He spoke about her in a Variety interview published in January 2020.

"I never really talk about my mom. She's an addict so we don't have the closest relationship. Even trying to get her better, things didn't quite work out. But there's still love," he told the outlet.

In the same interview he described the 2018 death of his grandmother as his first experience of losing someone close to him. He said it was devastating and made him a hypochondriac, waking with his heart racing.

His father, Robert Stafford, addressed Hill's addiction in an Instagram post in April 2021. "Although his mom is in a struggle with an addiction she's STILL a QUEEN and he goes through great lengths to make sure we're taking care of," he wrote, adding that there is not enough money anyone can throw at such a situation to make it right.

Arrest, Diagnosis and Recovery

The death follows a difficult period for the musician. He was arrested in Los Angeles in August 2025 after being seen walking down the street in only his underwear and boots in a disoriented state, USA TODAY reports. The NZ Herald says he was found wandering the streets in the early hours of the morning.

He was charged with three felony counts of battery with injury to a police officer and one count of resisting arrest, and pleaded not guilty to all of them. He was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

He subsequently said on Instagram that he had spent "a few months" in rehab, splitting time since between Atlanta with family and Los Angeles. He said he had known about the diagnosis for years but did not want to admit it, because he did not want to take medication or have people think differently of him.

"On a serious note, I'm doing much better, I'm feeling better, I'm creating freely, and there's less fear in my heart, and I'm just smelling the roses," he said.
