Case Details

Nigeria's first confirmed case of Ebola since the 2018 outbreak is the wife of a diplomat who holidayed in Uganda's capital, Kampala. She tested positive for the virus on October 19, 2026.

The patient, a 42-year-old woman, spent two and a half weeks in Kampala before returning to Abuja, Nigeria, on October 3, 2026. She developed symptoms on October 6 and was admitted to a private hospital on October 11.

Containment Efforts

Health authorities in Nigeria are working to contain the virus. The health minister, Muhammad Pate, stated that 44 people who had been in contact with the patient are now in isolation, with no known symptoms as of yet.

Pate explained, 'We cast the net wide so that we contain it as broadly as possible. Not all of them have been in close proximity.'

Regional Spread

The Ebola outbreak, which began in the Democratic Republic of Congo in May 2026, has now spread to four other countries, including Nigeria. The disease has claimed at least 4,600 lives and infected more than 9,500 people in Congo.

Uganda, where the patient had previously been, has not reported any active Ebola cases since August 27, 2026, but health officials are investigating her travel itinerary.
