Senate Democrats Threaten to Oust Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth
Democrats seek leverage over Hegseth as they push for bipartisan cooperation in defense funding.

Ouster Threats in Lame-Duck Session
Senate Democrats are quietly considering the ouster of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth after the November election, as part of a political trade-off for cooperation on key defense-related issues during the lame-duck session.
This move is seen as a way to lower the partisan temperature in the defense measures standoff, according to Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.).
Democrats are threatening to hold up emergency defense funding and regular funding for the Defense Department, which expires on December 11, as leverage for Hegseth’s departure.
Hegseth's Leadership Controversies
Hegseth has faced criticism for his leadership, particularly for the ouster of well-respected military leaders such as Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, Army chief of staff Randy George, Navy Secretary John Phelan, and four-star Gen. Chris Donahue, the top U.S. military officer in Europe.
While Defense Department recruiting records have set a record under Hegseth's leadership, his ousting is viewed as a disaster by Democrats.
Republican sources indicate that some GOP senators have privately expressed support for Hegseth's ouster in exchange for bipartisan cooperation on filling key Pentagon positions.
