Execution Cancelled
President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the planned execution by firing squad of Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood mass shooter, will not be livestreamed, reversing an earlier Pentagon decision.
Public Reaction and Details
The decision follows a backlash from the public, with an ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll showing that 80% of US adults, including 64% of Republicans, opposed the livestream.
Hasan, who was convicted of killing 13 people and injuring 32 others in the 2009 shooting, is scheduled to be executed on December 3 at Fort Hood, Texas.
Family members of Hasan’s victims will be able to watch the execution in person.
Background and Context
The decision to execute Hasan by firing squad was approved by President Trump after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth initially recommended it.
Hegseth had also planned to make the execution public, but the plan was met with widespread opposition.
Trump stated, 'I think streaming the execution for all to see might have been a strong deterrent for the World to witness how America deals with Terrorists and SCUM like Hasan but, many very good and well meaning people would rather not watch him die.'
