The United States is set to impose sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) as a response to ongoing investigations into officials from the US and Israel, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's arrest warrant for crimes against Palestinians in Gaza.
According to reports, US officials have warned the Netherlands, which hosts the ICC, to prepare for potential sanctions, which could disrupt the court's operations and prevent it from accessing financial and IT services.
The Dutch government is exploring measures to sustain staff and protected witness compensation, as well as guaranteeing uninterrupted security at the detention facility. The court has also taken precautionary steps, such as migrating to a German software provider and switching to insurance and financial providers without a US footprint.
Marco Rubio's Efforts to Dismantle ICC
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who previously called for the ICC to investigate Russia for war crimes during its invasion of Ukraine, is now expanding efforts to protect the US from international scrutiny.
In recent weeks, the US has withdrawn from the UN's Human Rights Council and escalated its push to dismantle the ICC. In August, the US imposed sanctions on ICC President Tomoko Akane and senior trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye.
Rubio described the sanctions as part of a campaign to dismantle the ICC 'brick by brick,' with the US placing diplomatic pressure on countries that rely on US assistance to withdraw from the ICC and reject its authority to prosecute Americans.
