We are currently seeking a detail-oriented, hands-on, and infrastructure-focused Engineering Manager to take the helm of our Notifications team, a key part of the Growth organization. This team is responsible for the platform and infrastructure that deliver every notification across Discord, the orchestration layer that optimizes notifications across various types, the in-app notifications center, and the user-facing settings and client experience. You will lead a team of full-stack engineers who manage critical systems accessed by hundreds of millions of users while ensuring the re-engagement tools that bring them back.

This position reports to the Senior Engineering Manager of Growth.

Your Responsibilities

* Manage a team of full-stack engineers dedicated to the notifications platform—Elixir services, Python backends, pubsub pipelines, and the underlying Kubernetes infrastructure * Establish technical direction for notifications infrastructure and ensure scalability as the volume and complexity grow * Collaborate with Product, Design, Data Science, and Marketing to shape and implement the notifications roadmap * Utilize experimentation and metrics to enhance notification engagement, retention, and long-term user trust * Foster a high-performing team through hiring, coaching, and implementing best engineering practices * Work closely with platform consumers across Discord to refine the foundational elements relied upon by other engineering teams * Contribute to strategic planning and organizational improvement with engineering leadership

Requirements

* At least 5 years of experience as a Software Engineer, with substantial time spent building and operating backend or infrastructure systems at scale * More than 2 years as an Engineering Manager * Proficiency with production systems built on technologies like Elixir, Python, pubsub/streaming pipelines, and Kubernetes, and a keen understanding of reliability, throughput, and cost efficiency at scale * Experience in collaborating with product managers, designers, data scientists, and other engineers to define and deliver solutions * Proven success in growing engineering teams and helping members succeed * A strong sense of ownership—actively involved in technical decisions and able to discuss them in depth with Discord staff * Capability to promote a culture of 80/20 thinking, rapid iteration, and high-quality delivery

Bonus Qualifications

* Experience leading teams that manage shared platforms or primitives used by other engineering teams * Expertise in delivering push notifications or similar re-engagement systems at a large scale, including knowledge of deliverability, throttling, and policy considerations * Full-stack experience, encompassing both frontend and backend development * A track record of driving measurable impact through experiments and data-driven decisions * Proven ability to increase engagement and long-term user retention through messaging or re-engagement features * Knowledge of the gaming industry * An active Discord user familiar with the core features and user flow of Discord communications

The base salary for this full-time role is between $248,000 and $341,000, plus equity and benefits. Compensation is determined by role and level, with individual pay influenced by relevant skills, experience, and education or training. For more details, please refer to our US role postings.
