About this job

Job Title: Member of Technical Staff, Frontier AI Job Type: Full-time Location: Remote

The Role We are seeking a Member of Technical Staff (MTS) to serve as a technical leader at the juncture of research, data, and real-world AI systems. This role involves hands-on work to enhance model and system performance through thorough evaluation, failure analysis, and iterative development. You will collaborate with researchers, domain experts, and operational teams to ensure that experimental work yields clear, defensible research findings and translates into significant improvements in deployed systems. Key Responsibilities

* Oversee research and evaluation projects from start to finish, including problem definition, data design, quality assessment, and signal verification.

* Develop data systems with an ML focus, including task definitions, annotation schemes, criteria, incentives, and pipelines optimized for downstream model performance.

* Investigate model and system failures to pinpoint root causes, edge cases, and areas for improvement.

* Convert ambiguous, real-world behaviors into structured evaluation frameworks and new data categories.

* Collaborate closely with researchers and domain experts to establish quality early on and continually elevate the signal quality.

* Rapidly iterate on evaluations, datasets, and feedback loops to boost system performance.

* Act as a quality gatekeeper, halting claims, pausing work, or altering scope when signal strength or data integrity is insufficient.

* Work with cross-functional and client-facing teams to articulate research advancements into clear, credible narratives supported by evidence.

* Identify gaps in data or evaluation coverage and recommend where to invest, iterate, or cease efforts based on learnings and impact.

Desired Qualifications

* Expertise in assessing research signal quality and determining when work is ready for broader application.

* Experience in designing ML-oriented datasets, evaluation frameworks, and quality assurance processes.

* Ability to transform complex, real-world behaviors into structured research and evaluation opportunities.

* Comfort operating in uncertain environments, with a proactive and decisive approach.

* Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly when explaining trade-offs, limitations, and signal quality to both technical and non-technical audiences.

* Proven track record of working directly with experts during project initiation, calibration, and iteration.

* A holistic approach to system improvement, focusing on end-to-end model or agent performance rather than isolated components.

Preferred Background

* Experience with reinforcement learning environments, simulators, or feedback-driven training systems.

* History of improving agentic systems or AI systems operating in real-world workflows.

* Prior involvement in applied research or production environments with direct impact on deployed systems.

* Experience in designing evaluation strategies for complex or real-world tasks.

* Familiarity with expert incentive design and engagement in high-stakes technical projects.

Compensation & Benefits Notice The estimated annual base salary for this full-time position is $240,000 - $350,000. Employees are eligible for equity compensation and may receive performance-based bonuses, contingent on role and subject to company policies. micro1 offers a comprehensive benefits package, including up to 100% reimbursement for health-insurance premiums, paid time off, a 401(K) plan with a company match, and additional benefits tailored to support a high-performing, remote-first workforce. micro1 is committed to equal opportunity employment.
