Nobel Prize in Literature Awarded

Canadian poet, essayist, and translator Anne Carson has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature.

The Swedish Academy selected Carson for her bold and inventive oeuvre that has created new forms for contemporary literature, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition.

Carson's Work and Recognition

Carson, born in 1950 in Toro, Canada, is known for genre-crossing works such as 'Autobiography of Red', a queer coming-of-age story reimagining a poem by the ancient Greek poet Stesichorus.

Her notable works include 'Eros the Bittersweet', 'Men in the Off Hours', 'Norma Jeane Baker of Troy', and 'Wrong Norma', a 2024 collection of pieces.

Surprise and Praise

Carson was surprised when she learned about the award. Ingrid Carlberg, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, informed her while she was in Iceland 'listening to the wind'.

Anders Olsson, chair of the literature committee, praised Carson's work, saying it 'leads to playful and ironic works that move not only between classical and modern poetry but also between different genres and art forms.'
