Canadian author Thélyson Orélien, known for his novel C’était ça ou mourir, has been accused of using artificial intelligence to write his best-selling book.
The allegations came late Monday afternoon when a social media account called 'Balance ton Claude' on X claimed that Orélien had used AI to write his novel, which has been translated into about 20 languages and is a bestseller in France.
AI detection results
An analysis using the Pangram tool showed a 94% probability that C’était ça ou mourir was generated with AI, according to La Presse. However, Hugo Larochelle, director of research at the Mila AI center, noted that there is no guarantee that these tools are perfect, and Pangram has a low rate of false positives.
Other tools used by the AFP had varying results, indicating that the same texts were 'very likely written by a human' in some cases.
Plagiarism accusations
Orélien is also facing plagiarism accusations, with the French newspaper Le Devoir reporting that he published opinion pieces between 2012 and 2014 that are very similar to existing texts.
For instance, a 2013 article in La Presse, 'Ne mettons pas nos héros sur un piédestal,' was found to be nearly identical to a piece by Andy Bautista in The Philippine Star, published five days earlier.
