Man City sign Enzo Fernandez for £125m on deadline day

A joint-British record fee

Manchester City signed midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for £125m, a joint-British record fee, as the Premier League and English Football League transfer window closed. BBC Sport reported the deal alongside City's signing of forward Iliman Ndiaye.

The Guardian reported that City spent £190m on two deadline day signings. BBC Sport said City's outlay for the window reached £458m, a Premier League record for a single window, passing the £415m Liverpool spent last summer.

Chelsea, meanwhile, took in what BBC Sport described as a world record amount in transfer fees over the summer, £425m.

Business across the divisions

Tottenham Hotspur brought in two Chelsea players, winger Mykhailo Mudryk and defender Tosin, according to the Guardian. Jack Grealish joined Everton, having completed a medical earlier in the day for another season long loan.

Sunderland confirmed the signing of Belgium winger Malick Fofana from Lyon of France. The Guardian reported Sunderland and Crystal Palace were competing for the 21 year old, who was valued at £30m. French football expert Robin Bairner told BBC Sport the price was likely 30m to 40m euros and called it an outstanding deal.

Elsewhere, Leeds United took France Under 21 winger Jean-Matteo Bahoya on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt of Germany, with a £1.7m loan fee, a £19.7m purchase option and up to £4.3m in add ons. Fulham signed Austria centre back David Affengruber, 25, from Elche of Spain for an undisclosed fee, and Brentford agreed a deal for 17 year old winger Kiefer Gorman from Watford.

Deals that fell through

Folarin Balogun's move to Everton collapsed after the player decided against proceeding, BBC Sport reported. The Guardian had earlier reported Balogun was having a medical at Everton as part of a proposed £40m transfer from Monaco.

Monaco also pulled out of a move that would have taken Camara to Chelsea. Aston Villa striker Tammy Abraham turned down an approach from Everton on deadline day and stayed at Villa Park.

Everton did complete the £4m signing of right back Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Lyon, and sold striker Beto to Fiorentina of Italy for £15.5m.

Record spending and late paperwork

BBC Sport reported that Premier League spending reached £3.41bn, breaking the competition's transfer record for a second straight summer. The Guardian noted that the seven highest spending clubs in the window were all English, with Chelsea top on 406.7m euros and Tottenham next on 354.7m euros, ahead of Newcastle United, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Arsenal. Real Madrid of Spain were eighth.

Clubs could still complete deals after the 23:00 BST deadline if they submitted a deal sheet by 21:00 BST. BBC Sport said it was not aware of any Premier League deal sheets lodged for Lamine Yamal or Harry Kane.
