Scheffler wins Tour Championship and second FedExCup

Comeback at East Lake

Scottie Scheffler won the Tour Championship at East Lake, the closing event of the PGA Tour's FedExCup Playoffs, to take the season-long FedExCup title for a second time.

Golf.com reports he began the final round three strokes back after 54 holes, won on Sunday and collected the $10 million first-place cheque. Sky Sports describes the result as a three-shot win over Viktor Hovland.

"To come from behind and be able to win the tournament is a really cool feeling," Scheffler said. "There was a lot of talented guys in front of me on the leaderboard. I was fortunate to get off to a good start and put myself in the mix."

Past Tiger Woods on the money list

Sky Sports reports the victory moved Scheffler ahead of Tiger Woods on the PGA Tour's official career money list. Woods' total stands at $120,999,166, the publication says, with the 15-time major winner having last featured competitively in 2024, while Scheffler broke through the $130m barrier at East Lake.

Sky Sports notes the two figures are hard to compare directly, because prize money has risen enormously since Woods' prime. It took Scheffler under five seasons to go from winless on the PGA Tour to breaking a record Woods had held for 26 years.

The win was his 22nd on the PGA Tour since the start of 2022, making him the 31st player to reach 22 career tour victories. He also joined Woods and Rory McIlroy as the only players with more than one FedExCup title.

A season of near misses

It was Scheffler's third win of the campaign. He opened the season by taking The American Express, then waited seven months for his next victory, finishing inside the top four 10 times in that stretch, including five second places and a runner-up finish behind McIlroy at the Masters.

He still entered the FedExCup Playoffs ranked No 1 for a fifth straight season, and won the opening playoff event, the FedEx St. Jude Championship, by eight shots.

"I felt like my thought process going into (the FedExCup Playoffs) was that maybe I've underperformed in some of the post-seasons in the past," Scheffler said, pointing to 2022 and 2023, when he led at the Tour Championship without winning the FedExCup.

Golf.com's writers, discussing what they call his first major-less season in three years, largely rated the eight-shot win in Memphis as his best of the year. Senior writer Josh Sens argued the "disappointing" label is unfair, noting three top-five finishes in the majors and top-15 results in all of them. The sources do not give Scheffler's final score at East Lake or his exact career earnings total.
