Verstappen’s Criticism

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen has called for Formula 1 to stop hosting sprint races on circuits where overtaking is difficult, specifically citing Singapore. The circuit hosted the first sprint race since 2021, where little passing took place.

Verstappen stated, 'I think we shouldn’t host a sprint where you can’t pass. If you have tracks where passing is possible, that works, but in some places you cannot pass and we are going to have sprints there also next year.'

Singapore Sprint Race Results

Max Verstappen won the sprint race in Singapore despite starting from behind after George Russell crashed during the first lap. Verstappen's teammate Isack Hadjar was unable to compete due to a car problem.

Kimi Antonelli qualified fourth, extending his lead over George Russell in the championship standings after Russell was penalized and started from the back of the grid.

Track Layout and Future Plans

Verstappen also called for changes to the track layout at Singapore to encourage more overtaking in future races. The circuit is known for its challenging overtaking opportunities.

The 2027 season will see an increase in sprint races to 10, including one at Monaco, known for its difficulty in overtaking.
