First Day of Play

On the opening day of the first Test against South Africa, Australia's captain Pat Cummins and Matt Renshaw led an afternoon fightback, scoring 187-6, despite South Africa's Anrich Nortje taking two wickets early in the innings.

The game was halted due to bad light one hour before the scheduled close, with the umpires waiting out for another 45 minutes before calling off the day's play. Nortje, returning after almost four years, justified his recall with a fiery spell that saw Australia fall to 124-6.

Australian Squad Challenges

Australia’s batting lineup remains makeshift, with Matt Renshaw taking over as the new opener. His preparation has consisted of one innings against Bangladesh in Mackay. Marnus Labuschagne reassured with a warm-up century, but the long-format bowling of Cameron Green, who was injured, and Beau Webster, bowling cover, remains uncertain.

Cameron Green's injury has opened the door for Cooper Connolly or Nic Maddinson, who, despite being a talent, has not yet demonstrated his potential in first-class cricket. Maddinson, a cancer survivor, failed to score in his first Test appearance in almost a decade.
