We have established a new Developer Relations team to connect directly with open-source communities and developer-focused organizations. We aim to share our vision and product offerings for enhancing open-source development experiences, while also gathering insights from these communities to guide our product development and strategic direction.
A Developer Relations Engineer is a technical expert, strategist, and communicator with a deep understanding of the developer community. This role combines practical engineering skills with the ability to navigate organizational boundaries effectively. They are always seeking to improve and are driven by a relentless curiosity to find better solutions. They understand user needs and are skilled in adapting tools to meet those needs. They keep up with the latest technological trends and use their insights to support and inspire innovation.

Location: Our initial Developer Relations team is based in time zones across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas.
A typical day for a Developer Relations Engineer might include:
- Participating in team product meetings, contributing insights and expertise at various levels, from strategy to day-to-day development progress. - Engaging with developer community members through various channels such as IRC, social media, product forums, and meet-ups. - Collaborating with colleagues from other teams to establish common goals and consistent approaches. - Assisting in resolving specific technical issues identified by users or colleagues. - Contributing to technical documentation to ensure that developers' needs are met. - Writing technical articles, presentations, or workshops. - Identifying new opportunities and areas for improvement in the developer experience. - Presenting at conferences, meetups, or technical events.
What we are looking for in a candidate:
- A background as a programmer or developer with a strong passion for and engagement in open-source software. - Experience in developing and deploying software using Linux. - Practical experience with Linux software packaging (including Snaps, debs, charms, rocks, PIP, containers). - An understanding of current software packaging issues and trends in the Linux ecosystem. - Contributions to open-source communities, software, and documentation. - Excellent communication and presentation skills. - The ability to work effectively, tactfully, and empathetically in diverse contexts. - The capacity to build trust, relationships, and confidence. - Willingness to travel globally twice a year for company events and upstream and partner events.
Additional skills you might also bring:
- Prior experience in a developer advocacy or community role. - In-depth familiarity with Ubuntu and the Canonical ecosystem of products.
