About this job

Canonical builds and ships open source software and operating systems to enterprise and technology markets worldwide. Ubuntu, our platform, powers major enterprise work in public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation and IoT. Customers range from the biggest public cloud and silicon providers to sector leaders across many industries. We pioneered distributed collaboration globally: 1200+ colleagues spread across 75+ countries, with almost no office-based positions. Teams gather in person two to four times each year, in interesting spots around the world, to align on strategy and execution.

We are founder-led, profitable and growing.

The open position is Embedded Linux Field Engineering Manager. You will run a regionally focused Field engineering team across Presales and Professional Services work, supporting customers on solution architecture, design and delivery.

Our Embedded mission: let companies build fleets of very secure connected devices. Canonical supplies Ubuntu, Ubuntu Core and a distinctive Long Term Support offering, together with secure update and management mechanisms. Customers use these to build mission-critical control systems, gateways and appliances that must clear demanding quality and security bars, and our ambition is to extend that security level across the broader consumer electronics and device market.

Field Engineers at Canonical act as thought leaders, guiding customers toward more secure and durable solutions. They are skilled technologists who get hands-on with embedded Linux strategy and delivery. They want customers to hit ambitious technical and business targets, and to demonstrate how the Canonical view of open source and connected devices contributes best-of-breed thinking to the young field of edge compute. They also invest in colleagues, growing their technical understanding, their time management, and their grasp of how customers think about business, all in service of continuous improvement and personal development.

This job calls for an unusual mix of abilities. Strong candidates know Linux deeply, understand how a distribution is put together, grasp what makes the Internet Of Things distinctive, and bring team building and management ability as well. They like rapid change and varied engagements with driven, ambitious technology entrepreneurs. Competitive, business-minded technologists by nature, they also drive teams and take pride in wins for the team and the company.

Location: globally remote, managing a team in one of three Geos: Americas, EMEA or APAC. You must be based in that Geo, so your team sits within a few timezones of you.

The role entails

* Leading and developing a team of Field engineers, ranging from graduate to senior, in the areas of Presales and Professional Services * Planning and driving progress on agreed goals and projects * Partnering with the leadership team * Developing and championing engineering excellence and organisational practices * Coaching, mentoring, and offering career development feedback * Solving customer problems by promoting our technologies and being a trusted advisor * Working remotely in a single major time zone * Identifying and measuring team health indicators * Implementing disciplined engineering processes * Representing your team and product to stakeholders, partners, and customers * Providing market feedback to Product and Engineering teams, and being a critical part of Ubuntu's future

What we are looking for in you

* Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university * Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, or a convincing account of the different path you took * Extensive embedded Linux experience, with Yocto or something else * Extensive Linux experience, Debian or Ubuntu preferred * Ability to manage a small team * Experience with customer engagements * Professional written and spoken English * Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability * Result-oriented, with a personal drive to meet commitments * An ability to communicate the business benefits of technology * A humble learner and quick study * Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long * Other traits we would like to see: RTOS experience, extra languages (programming and human alike), and past work at a remote-first, diverse, distributed company

What we offer colleagues

Pay worldwide is shaped by geographical location, experience and performance. We review compensation every year, and more frequently for graduates and associates, so that outstanding performance gets recognised. On top of base pay comes a performance-driven annual bonus or commission. Every team member also receives further benefits that reflect our values and ideals. We balance these programs to suit local needs while staying fair globally.

* Distributed work environment with twice-yearly team sprints in person * Personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year * Annual compensation review * Recognition rewards * Annual holiday leave * Maternity and paternity leave * Team Member Assistance Program & Wellness Platform * Opportunity to travel to new locations to meet colleagues * Priority Pass and travel upgrades for long-haul company events
