We are seeking an Engineering Manager for Ceph and Distributed Storage. In today’s digital landscape, more than 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are generated daily. Our mission is to assist teams in storing this data using open-source storage solutions on common hardware, ensuring it is safe, economical, and user-friendly. Our goal is to simplify Ceph’s installation, management, and use across large enterprise data centers to edge sites. We believe distributed storage should be straightforward and accessible to everyone.
As an Engineering Manager at Canonical, you will need to be technically proficient, yet your main role is to lead a high-performing team and foster the professional growth of your colleagues. Essential qualities include a background in software engineering and hands-on experience with technical leadership. You will be responsible for guiding, challenging, and nurturing strong engineers, shaping the company’s culture, driving technical delivery, and collaborating on strategy and execution. You must ensure robust software architecture and maintain the highest standards in software quality, testing, and documentation.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading a team dedicated to developing a Ceph-focused software-defined storage solution - Managing a globally distributed engineering team - Coaching and mentoring team members to enhance their skills and career development - Directly contributing to your team’s objectives by demonstrating sound engineering principles - Establishing and adhering to reasonable schedules based on well-considered estimates, with mechanisms for continuous improvement - Setting and maintaining expectations with other engineering teams and external stakeholders - Promoting modern, agile software development practices - Cultivating a culture of quality and engineering excellence - Fostering a collaborative and healthy engineering environment aligned with our values - Participating actively in leadership discussions and collaborating with other leaders within the organization - Working primarily from home, with up to 20% travel for internal and external events
Requirements:
- A software engineering background, ideally with experience in Python and C++ - Experience managing and operating scale-out storage clusters on Linux in production environments, particularly with Ceph - A passion for embracing new technologies and pushing the boundaries of what is possible - A proven track record in developing and growing people - An interest in building products that improve the way people operate software and infrastructure - A deep understanding and enthusiasm for software development - Experience leading, managing, coaching, and mentoring software developers to deliver high-quality, timely software - Strong experience in an agile development environment
