We are now seeking an Engineering Manager to oversee a team collaborating closely with Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and other leading cloud partners to optimize Ubuntu for their infrastructure needs. Our team focuses on creating, testing, and distributing base Ubuntu images, ensuring peak performance and security in cloud environments. We aim to deliver top-tier public cloud virtual machine experiences, along with specialized images tailored for specific uses on each cloud platform.

In this role, you must possess a blend of technical expertise and management skills to lead your team effectively. You will also serve as a key liaison with our partners. Ensuring the stability and functionality that our cloud users expect is paramount. You will work to automate the delivery of existing and new Ubuntu image products, covering a range of modern workloads from web servers to AI-powered GPU acceleration for servers, virtual machines, and containers.

Your primary role as an engineering manager at Canonical is to foster growth and success among your team members. A solid background in software development, along with the ability to inspire and mentor your team, is essential. You will have the opportunity to influence company culture, facilitate technical achievements, and collaborate on strategy and execution. Proficiency in Python and Golang is required, alongside a deep understanding of the architecture and components your team uses.

Key responsibilities include:

- Managing and guiding a team of engineers, both locally and in similar time zones - Coaching, mentoring, and offering career development opportunities - Upholding robust engineering principles and contributing to team goals - Setting and managing expectations with other engineering teams, management, and external stakeholders - Leading modern, agile software development practices - Promoting a healthy, collaborative engineering culture that aligns with company values - Participating actively in leadership discussions and collaborating with other organizational leaders - Building automated, highly reliable image delivery, testing, and publication pipelines - Engaging with multiple teams within Canonical, as well as with the open-source community and commercial partners

We are looking for an individual who is passionate about developing and growing talent, has a proven track record of doing so, and is deeply knowledgeable and enthusiastic about software development. A commitment to agile methodologies, along with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field, is preferred. Additionally, you should be proficient in Python or Golang, and possess strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience with cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, or AWS is advantageous.
