About this job

Canonical is developing an extensive automation suite for multi-cloud and on-premise data solutions for the enterprise. The data platform team is a collaborative group that designs managed solutions for a wide range of data stores and technologies, including big data, NoSQL, cache layers, and analytics, similar to how Amazon RDS operates. We are tackling the challenge of building fault-tolerant, mission-critical distributed systems and aim to deliver the premier automation solution for managed data platforms. We are seeking candidates at various levels, from junior to senior, who are passionate about big data technologies such as distributed event stores (Kafka) and parallel computing frameworks (Spark). Engineers who excel at Canonical are attentive to the dynamics of open-source communities and equally aware of the needs of large, innovative organizations. Location: This position can be filled in European, Middle Eastern, and African time zones. What your day will entail The data platform team focuses on automating data platform operations, including managing and integrating big data platforms at scale. This involves ensuring fault-tolerant replication, TLS, installation, and backups, among other tasks. The role also entails providing domain-specific expertise to other teams within Canonical.

* Collaborate actively with a distributed team

* Craft high-quality, idiomatic Python code for new features

* Diagnose issues and engage with upstream communities publicly

* Work alongside skilled engineers from various disciplines

* Share ideas and collaborate to find effective solutions

* Work remotely with occasional travel for 2 to 4 weeks per year for internal and external events

What we are looking for in you

* Demonstrated experience in software development using Python

* Experience with distributed systems, including Kafka and Spark

* A Bachelor’s or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field

* Willingness to travel up to four times a year for internal events

Additional skills you might bring You might also bring experience in operating and managing other data platform technologies, such as SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, etc.) and NoSQL (MongoDB, Redis, ElasticSearch, etc.), similar to a DBA level of expertise.

* Experience in Linux systems administration, package management, and infrastructure operations

* Experience with public cloud or private cloud solutions like OpenStack

* Experience with operating Kubernetes clusters and a belief in its use for persistent data services
