We are currently seeking to expand our in-house legal team and are inviting applications for a Legal Advisor or Legal Counsel position. The ideal candidate will be a highly skilled and effective lawyer with a proven academic and social engagement background. At Canonical, you will have the chance to engage in a range of compliance and privacy matters related to technology and enterprise software, as well as cutting-edge questions at the intersection of technology and law.
The role is based remotely in EMEA or the Americas, with the option to work from our London office. Responsibilities include:
- Drafting and reviewing corporate policies, leading process changes, and implementing controls to meet global compliance and regulatory requirements - Assisting in the development, maintenance, and scaling of global privacy programs, including conducting privacy impact assessments (PIAs) and risk of privacy assessment (ROPA) analyses, and supporting operational initiatives - Collaborating with cross-functional teams to assess the impact of privacy and data protection laws and regulations, including AI regulations - Providing legal support to various internal clients, including Canonical's product teams - Working with local counsel in multiple countries to obtain and implement legal advice
We are seeking candidates who:
- Have an exceptional academic record, including high school and university - Hold a law degree or equivalent and are licensed to practice law or are in the process of obtaining their license - Demonstrate a strong work ethic and a commitment to going above and beyond - Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a focus on clear drafting and presentation - Are confident and respectful, able to provide constructive feedback and share ideas - Appreciate diversity and are effective in a multicultural, multinational organization - Are organized, proactive, and efficient - Can make sound commercial judgments - Are willing to travel twice a year for up to two weeks to attend company events
Nice-to-have skills include:
- Experience in compliance, data privacy, or product development - Leadership skills and the ability to influence others - Knowledge of the open-source software community and values - Understanding of the technology industry, including silicon, data centers, PCs, connected devices, and software - Experience working in an in-house legal team or law firm
