About this job

Canonical is a pioneering provider of open-source software and operating systems, serving the global enterprise and technology sectors. Our flagship product, Ubuntu, is widely utilized in cutting-edge enterprise projects, including public cloud, data science, artificial intelligence, engineering innovation, and the Internet of Things. Our customer base comprises leading public cloud providers and top industry players across various sectors. The company champions global distributed collaboration, with a workforce of over 1200 colleagues spread across 75+ countries, featuring minimal office-based positions. Team gatherings occur bi-annually, in diverse locations worldwide, to align on strategic and operational goals.

As a founder-led, profitable, and growing organization, we are currently seeking a Senior Site Reliability Engineer.

Our mission is to deliver next-generation operations at scale, using pure Python infrastructure-as-code, from bare metal to containers and applications. The goal is to perfect enterprise infrastructure DevOps through comprehensive automation.

We manage numerous private cloud, Kubernetes, and application clusters for clients across both physical and public cloud environments. We are continuously raising the bar on automation, adopting a universal operator pattern and model-driven operations.

To succeed in this role, you must believe in automation as a pure software engineering challenge, not a makeshift solution. You should be passionate about the scientific approach to large-scale operations, guided by metrics and code, and capable of mastering the entire stack, from basic networking and kernel-level operations to serverless and open-source applications.

The position is based entirely remotely, with opportunities to engage in company events twice a year, which last up to two weeks and are held in interesting locations around the world.

Our cloud operations engineers integrate Python software-engineering skills into the operations domain, practicing DevSecOps from bare metal to application. We design and manage OpenStack, Kubernetes, and software-defined storage, and enable DevSecOps for applications running on this infrastructure.

To join this team, you should be a proficient Python software engineer, with a genuine interest in the full open-source infrastructure stack from hardware to containers, and the ability to work under high-pressure conditions with critical services for global clients.

As a team member, you will gain exposure to a wide range of cloud technologies. We continuously update our offerings as new advancements emerge, ensuring you remain current with the latest capabilities in open-source infrastructure. You will also drive upgrades to keep our customers on the most advanced and reliable solutions.

Requirements for the role include:

- A degree in Software Engineering or Computer Science - Experience with Linux and familiarity with Linux networking and storage - Python software development expertise - Operational experience - Exceptional interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability - Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long

Desirable skills include:

- Experience with OpenStack or Kubernetes deployment or operations - Familiarity with public or private cloud management

What we offer colleagues:

- A globally remote work environment with in-person team sprints bi-annually - A personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 annually - Annual compensation reviews - Recognition rewards - Generous annual holiday leave - Maternity and paternity leave - An Employee Assistance Programme - Opportunities to travel to new locations to meet colleagues - Priority Pass, and travel upgrades for long haul company events

About Canonical: Canonical is at the forefront of the global shift towards open-source technology. As the publisher of Ubuntu, one of the most significant open-source projects and the platform for AI, IoT, and the cloud, we are transforming the software landscape. We seek top talent globally, setting a high standard for those who join us. We expect excellence and are committed to continuous improvement, given that most colleagues have worked remotely since the company's inception in 2004. Working at Canonical is a step into the future, encouraging you to think differently, work smarter, learn new skills, and excel.

Canonical is committed to diversity and inclusion.

We are an equal opportunity employer, dedicated to fostering a workplace free from discrimination. We value diversity in experience, perspective, and background, creating a better work environment and superior products. We welcome all applicants, ensuring fair consideration of every application.
