About this job
Canonical stands out as a prominent provider of open-source software and operating systems, serving the global enterprise and technology sectors. Our flagship platform, Ubuntu, powers innovative enterprise projects such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering, and IoT initiatives. Our clientele includes leading public cloud and silicon providers, as well as industry leaders across various sectors. We embrace a global, distributed collaboration model, with 1200+ colleagues in 75+ countries, and minimal office-based roles. Teams convene in person two to four times a year, in engaging locations worldwide, to align on strategic and operational goals.
The company is independently founded, profitable, and expanding. Our mission is to revolutionize how companies manage their open-source information systems, both on public clouds and in their data centers. To achieve this, we are constructing a new community around Python and Chef for open-source applications, running on Kubernetes. Our goal is to migrate all Canonical and Ubuntu infrastructure services to this innovative, open-source codebase.
We believe we can significantly enhance the management of complex business operations and assist our clients in embracing these new methodologies and products. Historically, information systems have been inward-facing. We envision transforming our IS team into an extension of the product engineering capability at Canonical. Our internal workloads often mirror the open-source workloads desired by our customers. This team will standardize these workloads for real-time, automated operations on Kubernetes.
This position is ideal for software engineers passionate about Python, with a deep interest in distributed systems and the entire Linux stack, from kernel to networking to virtualization and containers. It demands both technical rigor and customer interaction skills. Our engineers are technically astute, open-source enthusiasts eager to contribute to cloud computing advancements and ready to join a global team committed to delivering top-tier services to our customers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and implement open-source software operations using Python - Engage with the full Linux stack, from kernel to applications - Enhance application and infrastructure reliability through rigorous thinking - Develop robust monitoring and alerting infrastructure - Simplify open-source operations for our customers and the broader community - Adhere to sound engineering design and testing principles in your code - Participate in agile software development practices - Mentor and mentor colleagues where you can offer insights - Foster a collaborative, healthy engineering culture aligned with company values - Work from home, with global travel for team events up to two weeks every year
We seek candidates who:
- Love technology and working with exceptional colleagues - Hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field - Have experience with Linux system administration, package management, and operations - Are familiar with at least one public cloud - Possess hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes - Are experienced Python developers and enjoy tackling challenging projects - Strive for reliable software design and coding - Are organized and committed to delivering high-quality, timely software
At Canonical, we prioritize geographical location, experience, and performance in determining compensation. We review compensation annually (and more frequently for graduates and associates) to ensure recognition of outstanding performance. In addition to base pay, we offer a performance-driven annual bonus or commission. We provide a range of benefits that reflect our values and support individual growth, including:
- A flexible work environment with in-person team sprints twice a year - A personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 annually - Annual compensation review - Recognition rewards - Generous holiday leave - Maternity and paternity leave - Employee Assistance Program - Opportunities to travel to new locations to meet colleagues - Priority Pass and travel upgrades for long-haul company events

Most colleagues at Canonical have worked from home since the company's inception in 2004. Joining us is a step into the future, challenging you to think differently, work smarter, learn new skills, and reach your full potential.
