We seek to hire an Ubuntu Security Engineer to join our industry-leading security engineering team, contributing to the protection of the open-source community and Ubuntu users against emerging threats. We welcome candidates at all experience levels, from graduates to seniors.
In this role, you will collaborate with some of the brightest minds in technology to monitor, triage, respond to, and document new and existing vulnerabilities in open-source software. You will interact with internal teams and external partners to identify issues, prioritize them, and coordinate remediation efforts.
This engineering-focused position also involves tasks such as producing security assessments, building features, conducting code reviews, developing internal tools, engaging with the open-source community, and participating in industry initiatives and events.
The role requires international travel at least twice a year, usually for one week. You must also be able to thrive in a globally distributed team through self-discipline and self-motivation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyze, fix, and test vulnerabilities in open-source packages. - Track vulnerabilities in the Ubuntu ecosystem as they are discovered, researched, and resolved, utilizing internal tools. - Collaborate with other teams in the Ubuntu community and upstream developers to exchange or develop vulnerability patches and ensure Ubuntu includes the most robust security features. - Audit source code for vulnerabilities. - Develop features and tools to help teams strengthen the security of their products and contribute to the overall security of Ubuntu.
What We Seek:
- A deep understanding of common security vulnerabilities and techniques for addressing them. - Experience with coordinated disclosure practices. - Proficiency in one or more of the following programming languages: C, Python, Go, Rust, Java, Ruby, PHP, or JavaScript/TypeScript. - Strong logical, problem-solving, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills. - Effective communication with the team and the Ubuntu community. - Proficiency with Linux (Ubuntu or Debian preferred). - Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability. - Appreciation for diversity and effective engagement in a multicultural, multinational organization. - Thoughtfulness and self-motivation. - A results-oriented approach with a personal drive to meet commitments.
