Atletico Madrid beat Sevilla 3-1 as Baena scores twice

Atletico Madrid won 3-1 away at Sevilla on Saturday 29 August in the third round of the 2026/27 Spanish LaLiga season, played at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium in Seville with a 21:30 Madrid kick-off.

Alex Baena scored twice and Ademola Lookman added the third, with Atletico 3-0 up by half-time, according to AP News. MARCA reported that Baena's first goal came inside the box from a through ball by Lee Kang-in, and his second from distance after a short pass from Marcos Llorente.

MARCA also named Sierra alongside Lookman among those who found the net, and described saves by Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak from Sevilla efforts before the interval. The sources do not give the timings of the goals.

Julian Alvarez left out of the squad

AP News reported that the Argentine forward Julian Alvarez was not even on the bench. Atletico insisted on the Thursday before the game that Alvarez will not be sold to Barcelona, but he did not train with his team-mates for most of the week.

According to the same report, he had already been left out of the squad for Atletico's LaLiga opener and was booed by the club's own supporters when he came on as a substitute the previous Sunday.

Coach Diego Simeone praised Baena and said his players had responded despite having no recognised centre forward. "We know where the objectives are, where the important matches are," he said, adding that his team had about 60 very good minutes in which every transition created danger.

Lee Kang-in's first assist

STARNEWS reported that South Korean midfielder Lee Kang-in, 25, started and played 72 minutes, registering his first assist since joining Atletico. The Spanish outlet AS wrote that there was no number nine but there were playmakers, and praised the midfield of Lee Kang-in, Baena, Pablo Barrios and Morten Hjulmand.

El Desmarque rated him 7 out of 10, while the statistics site FootMob gave him 8.0, citing 94% passing accuracy from 30 of 32 passes, one big chance created, three successful dribbles and seven duels won.

The win took Atletico to the top of the table on seven points from three games, with two wins and a draw. STARNEWS placed Sevilla fifth on six points.
