Mauritius Imposes Curfew After Police Shooting Sparks Riots
Mauritius, known for peace and stability, faces its worst unrest since 1999 as protests and violence erupt over water shortages and rising costs.

Riots Erupt in Mauritius
Police in Mauritius imposed an overnight curfew to quell the worst riots to break out on the Indian Ocean island in decades.
The protests, initially over water shortages and the high cost of living, escalated after a woman, 27-year-old Elodie Thomas, was shot by a police officer while traveling home in a van on October 9.
Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam ordered the curfew on Tuesday, warning against those 'acting against the interests of the country', emphasizing Mauritius as a tourism and financial services hub.
Government Response and Economic Impact
The curfew affects the capital Port Louis and major population centers, where public unrest is uncommon.
The government responded by closing schools and imposing a curfew, a move that has prompted the closure of public transport and warnings from foreign embassies.
The unrest, which began on October 7, has presented a challenge to Mauritius's reputation for stability, with the cabinet due to meet on Wednesday to reassess the situation.
