Weather Alert for Wellington

MetService has issued a wind watch for Wellington and Marlborough Sounds, effective from 9pm on Wednesday until 4am on Thursday. According to MetService meteorologist Dom Barry, a front moving up the South Island is expected to create gale force winds, with the strongest gusts anticipated around 9pm or 10pm tonight.

Barry explained that the 'squeeze' effect in Cook Strait, where winds tend to be more intense, is contributing to the heightened wind conditions. He advised residents to keep an eye on forecasts as the watch has a 'moderate chance' of being upgraded to a warning.

Temperatures Drop in Southern New Zealand

A blast of cold Southern Ocean air is bringing a significant drop in temperatures across New Zealand, with MetService predicting a 16C plunge in some areas. Hastings, for instance, is forecast to drop from 28C to 12C, while Gisborne is expected to cool from 25C to 12C over the same period.

The cold front is bringing southerly winds, which could result in snow on higher roads, including the Crown Range, Arthur’s Pass, and Lewis Pass. Snowfall is unlikely to be significant, but motorists are advised to keep an eye on the forecast.

Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Across New Zealand

A slow-moving front is currently sitting over the South Island, bringing persistent rain to parts of the West Coast and Canterbury, with Buller expected to be the worst affected. An orange-level heavy rain warning has been issued for Buller, while heavy rain watches are in place for Taranaki Maunga, the Tararua Range, parts of Westland and Canterbury, and areas of Otago.

Wellington and the Marlborough Sounds are also under a strong wind watch, with the potential for severe gale force winds in exposed areas overnight. Dunedin City Council is taking precautionary measures, including checking stormwater systems and clearing drains in high-risk areas.
